TRACK RASCALS

Why Track Rascals?
The Track Rascals program introduces young persons to the basic movements of all sports i.e. running, jumping and throwing. It is particularly important for 6 to 8 year olds to do this if they wish to pursue a sport of any type when they get older as this is the age range in which large body movements and coordination are being developed in the human body.

On January 22, 2005 Tom Dingle attended the AGM of BC Athletics and gave a 20 minute presentation on our Track Rascals Program. A copy of this presentation is posted here as a Microsoft Power Point File (10Mb). You can read the full version by clicking here. A shortened Power Point version (compressed slides and no pictures) can be downloaded by clicking here.

In 2001 the club initiated a program for 6 to 8 year olds called the Track Rascals program.  The purpose of this program was to introduce younger persons to the sport of athletics in a friendly and non-competitive manner.  The emphasis is on having fun and developing physically, but at the same time the participants are shown some of the basic aspects of track and field.

Following an exploratory program in 2001 under Dan Daniels, Pen Track’s first full Track Rascals program ran for 5 weeks from April 2-May 2, 2002. In following years the program has run for 45 to 60 min on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the month of April.

The popularity of the program is evident by the numbers enrolled each year. Track Rascals are also exposed to the doings of older track athletes as the regular practices of the Peninsula club are held at the same time or just after.

Peninsula Track Club owes a great debt of thanks to Dan Daniels who was the driving force in setting up the program and developing it for 8 years.

The Track Rascals program will be run again in the Spring of 2015.

Parental support was particularly encouraging, with approximately 20 present at the closing session where the Track Rascals were presented with a T-Shirt and a certificate

What Track Rascals received in the program was basic instruction about and participation in activities associated solely with the normal track & field program.
