2010 Zone 6 Team Selection

The Zone 6 team for the Summer Games was chosen at a meeting held immediately after the events were finished on Sunday, May 23 and the official results were available. The selection committee was composed of coaches or representatives from all the clubs and schools of athletes being considered for selection. Athletes who were registered as independents could also have a representative at this meeting. No athletes being considered were allowed at the meeting.

At the games an athlete can compete in up to three events for which they qualify plus one relay OR in the Pentathlon plus one relay.

·         If an athlete qualified for more than three events, then they were asked to choose soon after the trials in which three events they wish to compete at the Summer Games.

·         Athletes opting for the Pentathlon cannot compete in any other events at the Summer Games other than one relay.

·         Athletes will be contacted by the Zone 6 representative, Tom Dingle, to confirm all their events based on the schedule.

One 4 x 100 and one 4 x 400 relay team for each gender will be chosen by the coaches at the Summer Games from among the athletes on the Zone 6 team present at the Games and in a condition to run the relay.

Initial team selection

In the first go round the Zone 6 selection committee chose 36 athletes (18 females and 18 males) subject to the following constraints:

0)      Athletes who were first or second in Race Walk, Pentathlon and Pole Vault were designated as Wild Card selections as there are always more than enough Wild Card places available for them in the Wild Card round. This makes selection of athletes easier for the more contested events.

1)      First place finishers in each event were selected first. If an athlete qualified in four or more events or in the pentathlon or one or more individual events then their coaches or representatives confirmed their event selection.

2)      Athletes who could not attend the trials meet who had applied for and had been granted a waiver due to medical, travel or other domestic reasons were now added to the pool of possible team members using the best results from a sanctioned meet this season to place them in the listings.

3)      Athletes who were already on the team from step 1) and who placed second in one or more other event after 2) had been instituted, had those events added.

4)      Athletes who were not on the team but who were second in more than one event were added if their performance was deemed moderately competitive or were added to the Wild Card pool.

5)      Athletes who were not yet on the team but who were second in one event had their results compared and those who were considered the most competitive were added to the team.  The others were placed in the Wild Card pool.

6)      All remaining athletes were place in the Wild Card pool

7)      If possible the empty places in the events list were filled (up to 3 in the 100m and 200m and up to 2 in the other events) with athletes with third place finishes already on the team.

Athletes who are chosen for the Zone 6 team will be notified as soon as possible after the Trials as will those placed in the Wild Card pool.

Wild Card Round

Athletes who do not make the team on the first round MAY be selected as Wild Card athletes to fill vacancies that are available in various events when the teams from other zones are known.

Athletes in this category are placed in a pool of athletes from all other zones who have not made their zone team on the first round and those athletes with the best performance in an event will be added to their Zone team if vacancies in an event(s) become available. When the choice comes down to comparing athletes from two different events, a points system, similar to the VIAA awards system based on performance, will be used to rank each performance. Athletes in this category will probably be notified as soon as possible after the last trials in the province have been completed and each zones’ team lists have submitted to the provincial organizer (around June 14).

Substitution Pool

Athletes who have not made the team after the above procedure is completed, MAY be selected as substitute members to fill team vacancies due to illness, injury or other reasons.

Athletes in this category could be added to the Zone 6 team at any time up to the Wednesday before the start of the Summer Games (.July 21) if a place should become available, although the probability is low that this will occur.

It is highly unlikely that athletes who did not achieve a placing of 5th or lower in at least one event at the trials will be considered for either the wild card or the substitute pool.

The final team lists with substitutes must be registered with the Summer Games organization no later than June 21 so all athletes who competed at the trials will be notified of their status at that time.
