Youth 15, JUVENILE, JUNIOR AND OPEN

Updated Sunday, March 18, 2007
Youth 15 athletes are 15 year olds (for 2007, born in 1992). Juvenile Athletes are 16 and 17 years old (for 2007, born in 1990 or 1991). The major Championships for Youth 15 and Juveniles are the BC Juvenile Track and Field Championships, Legion Trials and Western Canada Games Trials (to be held in Nanaimo, July 7 and 8, 2007), the Canadian Legion Track and Field Camp (effectively a Canadian Juvenile Championship to be held in Oromocto, New Brunswick, August 8 to 14, 2007) and the World Youth Championships (to be held in Ostrava, Czech Republic, July 11 to 15, 2007). Athletes concentrate on a small number of events (unless they are training for the multievents). In the past many Island athletes have gone to the Canadian Legion Camp. The qualifying trials for the legion Camp are held at the BC Juvenile Championships.
Junior Athletes are 18 and 19 years old (for 2007, born in 1988 or 1989). The Major Championships for Juniors are the BC Junior Championships (to be held in Kamloops, June 23 and 24, 2007), the Canadian Junior Track and Field Championships (to be held in Abbotsford, July 27 to 29, 2007) and the BC Open Cross Country Championships (to be held in Victoria, Oct. 27, 2007). This year also are the Western Canada Summer Games (Aug 3 to 11, Strathcona County, Alberta) with the trials beeing held at the BC Juvenile Track and Field Championships, Legion Trials and Western Canada Games Trials (to be held in Nanaimo, July 7 and 8, 2007)
Open (or senior) athletes are 20 to 39 years and they compete in the BC Track and Field Championships (held in Kamloops, June 23 and 24, 2007) and Canadian Track and Field Championships ( in Windsor, July 12 to 15, 2007) and the BC Open Cross Country Championships (to be held in Victoria, Oct. 27, 2007). This year also are the Western Canada Summer Games (Aug 3 to 11, Strathcona County, Alberta) with the trials beeing held at the BC Juvenile Track and Field Championships, Legion Trials and Western Canada Games Trials (to be held in Nanaimo, July 7 and 8, 2007). Very elite athletes train for the IAAF World Chmapionships and the Olympic Games.

In 2003 and 2004 the Canadian Track and Field Championships were held in Victoria.

Members in these three categories have individualized programs depending on the events they wish to train for and their long term goals.
