PEN TRACK SENIORS EXCEL AT B.C.
GAMES
In
the final event of the competitive season, the older members of the Peninsula
Track & Field Club invaded Penticton for the B.C. Seniors Games and came
back loaded with medals and new Games records.
Leading
the parade was Les East in the M60 class who, attending the Games for the first
time, not only snagged gold medals in the Discus (28.58m) and High Jump (1:10m)
but, in winning the 5km Hammer event, set a new Games record of 24.06m. He also took silver in the Long Jump
competition.
Another
golden ‘first timer’, John Affleck, also set a new Games record in his M55 6km
Hammer event with a heave of 21.18m to go with his bronze medal in the Shot.
70
year old Gwen Havies, competing in her 3rd Games, was thrilled with
her record setting gold medal performance of 0.85m in the High Jump, to which
she added two bronze medals in the Hammer and Shot events.
Sandy
Anderson, an earlier “Pen Track Athlete of the Week”, brought home 3 gold
medals with her wins in the Shot (8.43m), Discus (18.05m) and as a member of
the Zone 1 4x100m relay, plus two silvers in the High Jump and Javelin, and a
bronze in the Hammer Throw.
Marjorie
Daniels (W70), taking part in her 12th Seniors Games, repeated her
triumphs of earlier years by again winning the 100m (20.85) and 200m (45.36)
and adding a 3rd gold medal as part of the 4x100m relay team.
Danny
Daniels, the team coach, again brought home a gold medal in his favourite
event, the grueling day-long Pentathlon competition, scoring 2365 points, while
adding Discus gold (22.79m) and High Jump bronze medals to his collection.
Rounding
out the Pen Track winning totals were Wendy London (W60) with a 4x100m relay
gold medal and, savouring her first medal performance in her 4th
Games, Peggy Morfitt (W65) with a well-deserved silver in the Hammer Throw.
Is
it any wonder that the younger members of the Pen Track Club perform so well in
their competitions when they have role models like these to follow?
