For Peninsula Track Athletes -  2005

DOGWOOD MEET SCHEDULE   -  May 14 and 15.  At Centennial Stadium on the UVic campus.  NOTE: UVic charges for parking BY THE STADIUM.

THIS MEET IS MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE ($6.00 PER EVENT) THAN THE OTHER ISLAND MEETS.  DEADLINE FOR NORMAL REGISTRATION IS FRIDAY, MAY 6.  PENINSULA TRACK HAS A POLICY OF  FUNDING ATHLETES FOR UP TO SIX EVENTS FOR THE WEEKEND.  ATHLETES MAY ENTER MORE EVENTS AT THEIR OWN COST.  LATE REGISTRATION FEES AND MISSED EVENTS WILL BE CHARGED TO THE ATHLETE.

It is advisable to get to the track at least 1 hour before the first event you want to compete in.  This will allow you  time to get your REGISTRATION NUMBERS, to warm up and to ensure that you will be there if the event starts early (up to ½ hour earlier is allowed).

Highlight your events and times on the schedule below.  You should CHECK the schedules  posted at the meet to make sure that  this schedule is still valid for your events.

THE DOGWOOD IS A QUALIFICATION MEET FOR THE WORLD YOUTH GAMES TO BE HELD IN MARRAKECH, MOROCCO IN 2005.  THE AGE RANGE IS JUVENILE (1988 AND 1989) AND OLDER MIDGETS (1990). ATHLETES PLANNING ON TRYING TO QUALIFY IN FIELD EVENTS MUST COMPETE IN THE Y/1989+ CATEGORY (I.E. OLDER MIDGETS HAVE TO MOVE UP).

PENINSULA TRACK’S OFFICIATING DUTIES ARE AT THE LONG JUMP AND TIMING STATION BY THE FINISH LINE.  WE NEED VOLUNTEERS ON BOTH DAYS. Any parent who is available may be called on to help during the meet.  No previous experience is necessary and we have great stop watches from the 1996 Commonwealth games.

Notes: Athletes should not leave their field event for a track event until their age/gender division is called by the announcer. Parents or coaches may want help by standing near the track marshalling area monitoring the progress of events.  Athletes must return to their field event as soon as they complete a track event.  Upon returning to the field event you may find that you have missed one or more turns. The rules state that  if you checked with the officials before you left you can be allowed back into the competition but only at the point in the competition that exists when you return.  You are not allowed to go back and do jumps or throws that you missed while doing the track event .  Therefore, you should check into the field event when it is called, you should leave for the track event as close to its start as possible, letting the field  officials know you are leaving, and return to the field event as quickly as possible after doing the track event.  Sometimes, you may just have to make a choice as to which event you want to do.  Other times you may have a conflict between two field events and you will have to run back and forth between the two.  However, the persons creating the schedule try to avoid having this happen.

The times in the above table very often have to be modified during the meet itself due to weather, numbers of competitors and other factors, so if you are doing several events pay attention to what is going on at the other locations and try to keep track of any time changes for the events you plan on competing in. ALL EVENTS MAY BE MOVED UP TO ½ HOUR EARLIER THAN ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED.

TAKE LOTS OF WARM CLOTHING WITH YOU EVEN IF THE DAY LOOKS NICE IN THE MORNING.  IT IS EASY TO REMOVE EXTRA CLOTHING BUT YOU CAN BE VERY MISERABLE IF YOU DON’T HAVE ENOUGH CLOTHING WITH YOU AND IT GETS COLD OR WINDY.  UVIC HAS A COVERED STAND BUT THERE IS OFTEN A NASTY BREEZE.  IT IS WISE TO TAKE AN UMBRELLA AND DRY CLOTHING WITH YOU WHEN YOU GO TO ANY MEET.  A WATER BOTTLE IS ESSENTIAL AND SOME SNACK FOOD IS NICE.  THERE IS A CONCESSION STAND. PLEASE LABEL ALL TRACK CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT SO RECOVERY IS EASY.

VANCOUVER ISLAND TRACK AND FIELD SERIES:

Series awards are given to athletes who compete in four of the six meets.  There are two such awards for each age group:  Best four performances at different meets and best Run, Jump and Throw performances at four meets.  A points system (similar to pentathlon and decathlon scoring)  is used to determine the best performances.  Three meets will have already been completed.
