George Dean Memorial Track and Field Meet – April 17 and 18, 2010

Blue Heron Track (Parkland School) –North Saanich, BC

Schedule of Events in Alternate Format

Up to date as of April 11, 2010

Notes:

1) Since this meet is the first in the 2010 Island series, we have scheduled a MINI-CLINIC (20 minutes) on track and field procedures and etiquette.  This will be run by Dan Daniels or Tom Dingle at 11:10 on Saturday and will cover the general procedures that all athletes and parents should be aware of when attending ANY track meet.   ALL athletes and parents should attend, particularly those athletes and parents who are attending a meet for the first time. What you find out here may save you from missing an event or being disqualified at future meets.

2) This schedule is similar to the one used at the George Dean Meet in 2009.  Much of the scheduling is required by the physical layout of the facilities at the Parkland Track.  The timing is based on the number of athletes in each event at the early sticker meets in 2009.

This year there are a number of changes of events for the Midget (born 1995 and 1996) and the Youth (born 1993 and 1994) categories mainly in some of the longer races.  This is a consequence of BC Athletics adopting these changes for these age groups as recommended by Athletics Canada.  The changes are Athletics Canada application of the Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model to athletics.  There will be similar changes for the 9 to 13 year old group put in place in 2011.

Since this is a BC Summer Games year, Midget athletes will compete together, but ribbons will still be awarded to each age group.

3)  Hammer and Discus Events are all held in throwing cage.

4)  The run up to the Javelin crosses the track at the 300m mark and also runs close to the high jump pits.  I have tried to schedule the events to minimize any conflict.

5)  We hope to have two regular high jump pits.  I have tried to schedule all the high jump events on one pit with the younger athletes scheduled close together.  If there is a time problem, the second pit can be created for these younger athletes by using the two mats separately.

6)  I have tried to schedule the shot put events on one circle but there is second circle that can be used if there is a time problem.

7)  We have only one runway but two ends for both the long jump and the triple jump.  This may necessitate so overlap in the run up for older athletes.  However, every attempt has been made to minimize this.

8) Relays:  The VIAA has dropped the Medley relays (200, 200, 400 and 800) from Island meets.  The 4x100m relays are schedule for Saturday afternoon.  On Sunday 4x400m relays are scheduled for athletes 14 years (born 1996) and older.

Teams can be formed with athletes of the same gender but from the same club or from different clubs.  The category of the relay team is specified by the oldest athlete on the team.  Island Relay awards will be based on the number of relays run.

9)       The rubberized surface on the track is old and thin.  This may cause some problems for those runners using spikes so they may want to use running shoes.  They can view this meet as a warm up to the rest of the season.

10)   THERE IS A NEW FALSE START RULE.  FOR 96+ A FALSE START RESULTS IN DISQUALIFICATION. FOR 9 TO 13 YEAR OLDS ONE FALSE START WILL BE STILL BE CHARGED TO THE FIELD.
