For Peninsula Track Athletes -  2005

COMOX VALLEY MEET SCHEDULE -  April 30. The Vanier School Track in Courtenay is at the corner of Vanier Drive and Headquarters Road, north of the city center.  Follow the old Island Highway east of the town center until you get to Headquarters road (intersection with lights where highway veers off to right). Go straight through intersection and proceed about 1 km north.  Track is on right just before you get to Vanier Drive.  Click here for map to stadium

It is advisable to get to the track at least 1 hour before the first event you want to compete in.  This will allow you  time to get your stickers, to warm up and to ensure that you will be there if the event starts early (up to ½ hour earlier is allowed).

Highlight your events and times on the schedule below.  You should check to schedules  posted at the meet to make sure that  this schedule is still valid for your events.

RESULTS FROM THIS MEET WILL BE POSTED ON WEB SITES.  IF YOU DO NOT WISH YOUR CHILD’S NAME TO APPEAR ON A WEB SITE, PLEASE DO NOT ENTER HIM OR HER IN THIS MEET.

TAKE LOTS OF WARM CLOTHING WITH YOU EVEN IF THE DAY LOOKS NICE IN THE MORNING.  IT IS EASY TO REMOVE EXTRA CLOTHING BUT YOU CAN BE VERY MISERABLE IF YOU DON’T HAVE ENOUGH CLOTHING WITH YOU AND IT GETS COLD OR WINDY.  COURTENAY, NANAIMO, PORT ALBERNI AND VICTORIA HAVE COVERED STANDS BUT DUNCAN AND SIDNEY DO NOT.  HOWEVER, IT IS WISE TO TAKE AN UMBRELLA AND DRY CLOTHING WITH YOU WHEN YOU GO TO ANY MEET.  A WATER BOTTLE IS ESSENTIAL AND SOME SNACK FOOD IS NICE.  MOST MEETS HAVE A CONCESSION STAND.

PENINSULA TRACK’S OFFICIATING DUTIES ARE AT THE TIMING STATION BY THE FINISH LINE AND AT THE LONG JUMP.  ANY NEW PARENTS WHO WOULD LIKE TO LEARN ABOUT HAND TIMING SHOULD TRY IT OUT FOR AN HOUR OR TWO.  IT MAKES A NICE BREAK TO JUST STANDING AROUND WAITING FOR YOUR CHILD’S EVENT TO TAKE PLACE. WORKING AT THE LONG JUMP WILL PUT YOU IN SHAPE FOR GARDENING.

Notes: Track events run from oldest to youngest. All track events should start on time. However, all events may start up to one half hour before scheduled time. Athletes should not leave their field event for a track event until their age/gender division is called by the announcer. Parents or coaches may want help by standing near the track marshalling area monitoring the progress of events.  Athletes must return to their field event as soon as they complete a track event.

Upon returning to the field event you may find that you have missed one or more turns. The rules state that  if you checked with the officials before you left you can be allowed back into the competition but only at the point in the competition that exists when you return.  You are not allowed to go back and do jumps or throws that you missed while doing the track event .  Therefore, you should check into the field event when it is called, you should leave for the track event as close to its start as possible letting the field  officials know you are leaving, and return to the field event as quickly as possible after doing the track event.

Sometimes, you may just have to make a choice as to which event you want to do.  Other times you may have a conflict between two field events and you will have to run back and forth between the two.  However, the persons creating the schedule try to avoid having this happen.

The times in the above table very often have to be modified during the meet itself due to weather, numbers of competitors and other factors, so if you are doing several events pay attention to what is going on at the other locations and try to keep track of any time changes for the events you plan on competing in. ALL EVENTS MAY BE MOVED UP TO ½ HOUR EARLIER THAN ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED.

VANCOUVER ISLAND TRACK AND FIELD SERIES:

To insure that our athletes get exposure to competition under friendly and enjoyable conditions, the Track clubs on Vancouver Island host SEVEN meets during April, May and June.  Most  events for athletes born in 1996 and earlier are available at these meets (sometimes some events omitted).  Ribbons are given to the top eight finishers in each event at each age level at each meet .

SERIES AWARDS (really neat rosettes) are given to athletes who compete in FOUR of SIX meets (performances from the Throws/Pentathlon meet count for points but the meet itself does not).  There are two such awards for each age group:  Best Four performances at different meets and best Run, Jump and Throw performances at the Island series.  A points system (similar to pentathlon and decathlon scoring)  is used to determine the best performances.
