School Responsibilities for athletes going to Islands

For information regarding the Island Championships, please go to:

http://www.islandnet.com/~athletic/index.html  or

http://www.islandnet.com/~athletic/track_field.htm#eventspecs

Bantams and Juniors can move up to an open category at Islands to try to qualify in the open category for provincials by placing in the top 3, but then compete in their own age category in other events.

Hammer and Steeplechase are the only events that are offered in the open category only at Islands.  Therefore, if a junior or bantam athlete wants to try these as an open event at Islands, this WOULD be one of their 3 events, because they are only allowed 3 events at Islands, too, plus, two relays.  If they are not going to do these at Islands, then it would not be one of their 3 events at North Islands, but they could do it just for fun.

For information regarding BC High School Championships, please go to:

http://www.bcsscctfa.bc.ca/webs/track/track.html

Only the top 3 in each event in the OPEN category at the Islands will advance to the BCHS Meet.

Bantams (grades 8/9) qualify for BCHS Bantam championships by attaining “Standard” at ANY meet. Check the Islands website above for clarification, deadlines, and entry procedures.

The list of athletes who qualify for the Island Meet in Victoria will be posted at www.crcs.bc.ca/northislands/ . It is up to the individual schools to check this list and inform Kathy Rung if an athlete is unable to compete, in order for another athlete to have this opportunity.

Senior athletes in grades 11 and 12 must be entered into the Island meet by their school, using the entry information at the Island site above.

BC Athletics and VIAA Clubs Information

As you can see from the other information I have included in our meet package, the North Island High School Meet will be held at our Bob Dailey Meet. We have made a few changes based on what we learned last year from hosting the North Islands at a regular club meet.  We have totally separated the school events for Bantams and Juniors from the club ones.  The school athletes, Grades 8-10, will be competing in separate field events, and race results will not mix club and school athletes. The Grade 11 and 12 school athletes will be competing with stickers in the club events because they don’t have to qualify for the Island Meet.

How will this impact you as clubs?

If you have a club athlete who is in Grade 8-9 (Bantam) or grade 10 (Junior) and is competing for their school, they are only allowed to go into 3 individual events plus two relays (4x100 and 4x400). If they want to go into more events, use the club stickers, but don’t pay for them. If you have grade 11 and 12 school athletes in your club, they have the option of competing for their club or their school, so depending on what choice is made, the school or club must pay their entry fee.  You will notice that I have various fees for the schools depending on whether they send me the names a week ahead so they can be entered into the computer. All results can be used for BC Athletics results and rankings stats, as well as for VIAA club and athlete points.

If you have any athletes who have a good chance at making the World Youth standard (16 and 17 year olds only), and they want to compete in a field event twice that weekend, please send me an email with their name, event, etc, and a fairly strong commitment that they would like to compete in the same event both days. I can try to arrange it if possible.  The qualifying window starts May 1, so this is the first opportunity for achieving standard, so it may be a bit early in the season for them to push that hard. Of course, the weather also has a role in this, I realize. I am willing to try to accommodate this with a change in the schedule up to a week before the meet. Check our website for the final schedule:  www.avtrackclub.com

Some clubs have new officiating events so we will try to have officials available to help out with training, as many volunteers will need a little help.

Regular VIAA registration fees of $12.00 for one day and $17.00 for two days apply. VIAA charges will come out of these fees.

If you have any other feedback or information that might be helpful in organizing this meet, please contact me.

Thanks.
