BC Disability Games, Kelowna, July 9 - 13, 2003
Florence and Tom Dingle officiated in the Athletics part of the BC Disability Games. Pen Track athlete Tye Landels competed in the games. In Athletics there were blind athletes, deaf athletes, athletes in wheel chairs and others with various ambulatory difficulties. Although the number of athletes competing was small, their dedication to the sport, their determination to perform and the great joy they took in competing was inspiring.
All the events in athletics try to stick as close as possible to the original events. However, some accommodation must be made for the disabilities. Some athletes in wheel chairs have to be tied down in the throwing events. Blind long jumpers have to jump from a 1 meter square at the end of the runway rather than staying behind a mark after being guided to the runway by an aide. Some wheel chair athletes try running using the petra, a sort of wheeled frame. I took some pictures which can be seen by clicking here.
Other sports at the games include boccia (played by the very disabled), sailing, wheelchair basketball and soccer, golf, goalball (for the blind), tennis, etc. Full details with lots of pictures can be found at the BC Disability Games website: http://www.kelownagames.org/results/athletics.htm
On Saturday evening there was a show and dance for the athletes and volunteers. At the dance the floor was packed with wheel chairs moving in time to the music, blind athletes dancing in a world of their own, etc. In spite of their disabilities they entered into everything with great gusto.
