Throws Clinic -- Courtenay, Jan. 17, 2004Hosted by Comox Valley Cougars Track ClubFifteen athletes and Eight Coaches in attendance. Cool with some showers but on the whole the weather was reasonable. Meat and Cheese buns, bagels, fruit, hot chocolate, etc. prepared by Christine Morfitt. Many thanks to Tony Dickson, John May, Graham Morfitt and John Root who did the coaching and all the other Comox Valley cougars who did such a great job in organizing and running this clinic.Schedule:1) Warmup exercises done by the athletes in attendance (30 min) with coaches observing and discussing.2) Split into three groups with two rotations: Shot (2 x 4 athletes) , Javelin (2 x 5 athletes) and Discus and Hammer (2 x 5 athletes). Athletes were shown drills to help improve their skills and coaches watched and discussed while athletes did the drills. Then athletes did five or six thows which were videotaped for viewing and discussion later. Strong emphasis on having athletes state what they were thinking as they did their throws so that they get used to concentrating on what they do in each throw so that they can analyse and improve their throwing (2 x 60 min) 3) Lunch and discussion (60 min). 4) Viewed videotapes of athletes throwing including some of Olympic athletes in 2000 and discussed (60 min inside where it was warm!) 5) Some athletes stayed behind to try out javelin exercise machine used by Graham Morfitt. The pictures below were taken by Tom Dingle and therefore are biased in that they tend to show three Peninsula Track athletes (Thomas Feil, Peter Root and Mike Woodward) and Coach John Root. |
