New Standards for Awarding JD Awards

The Junior Development Committee has changed the criteria for the awarding of JD Awards.

Rationale:

-- It was felt that the previous criterion of giving a JD Award based upon the #10 performance in an event on the All Time Top Ten list had certain deficiencies

----------- a)      The spread between number #1 and # 10 for established events such as the long jump and 100m was very small so that an athlete almost had to get a #1 performance to be considered

----------- b)      The percentage difference between the #1 and #10 performances tended to bias the criteria in favor of one of the three areas of track and field

----------- c)      The distribution of awards between the three areas of track and field was not very representative of the actual number of events or the participation in those events

In the fall of 2006, The JD committee asked Tom Dingle to look at the problem from various angles and come up with recommendations about the criteria. It is on the basis of his report (click here) that the committee has changed the criteria for the JD Awards to be as follows:

New Criteria:

----------- 1)    Athlete must be a full time competitive member of BC Athletics

----------- 2) Athlete must compete in at least one BC Junior Development Championship in the preceding 12 months

-------------- (Track and Field, Pentathlon and Cross Country)

-------------- AND at least two other meets from the approved list

----------- 3)      At any meet on the approved list of meets:

------------------ a.      9 to 12 year olds should have at least one performance that attain or exceeds the standard

---------------------- AND during the season have competed in at least one running event, one jumping event and one throwing event (each can be at the same or different meets)

------------------ b.      13 to 14 year olds should have at least one performance that attains or exceeds the standard
