Note from Brian Foan explaining reason for changing Oceanside Race Results:

February 24, 2005

I've also included the revised results of the Oceanside Meet as the results of the 92 girls race has been adjusted after a protest from the CeeVacs club.

The circumstances are:

A girl arrived after the race for the 92 girls had began.  The race was timed although no times were included with the published results.

She was allowed to start the next race for older girls and was timed for one loop which was the distance run in the official race for the 92 girls.

As her time was faster than the winner of the official race, she was awarded first place and the actual winner demoted to second place and so on down the placings.  The published results of the meet indicated that she had won the race.

Reasons for over turning the published results:

1.  Nobody can win a race they don't enter

2.  A race is a race not a time trial

3.  Consistency:

It is not unusual for an athlete to miss a race and be allowed to  start a subsequent race.   Since we abandoned "participation" points a few years ago, our practice has been to place these athletes behind the racers who competed in the right race.  We use the same practice for those masters who choose to run the longer distances of younger runners.

After taking into account the results of the Victoria race, the ruling has changed first place in this category.  The girls get a final chance to decide this at the Peninsula race.
