Peninsula Track and Field Club

Criteria for awards

Inspirational Athlete:

Athletes can inspire other athletes in a variety of ways:

¨      continuing and consistent performance to a high standard in competitions particularly at the provincial, national or international level

¨      showing good sportsmanship at all meets and other club activities.  This means doing their best at all times, winning graciously and accepting defeat gracefully.

¨      encouraging other athletes (both the club’s and others) at all meets and practices

¨      showing dedication and persistence in developing their individual skills

¨      coaching and helping other athletes at club meets and practices

¨      helping out at the various club activities (meets, water stops, etc.)

Ideally, candidates for this award should be doing all the above.  However, this is the club’s premiere award and there should be somewhat  more emphasis on the first  criterion, i.e. performance of a continuing and high standard at meets beyond Vancouver Island. For JD athletes this means the BC JD Championships (and the BC summer games for midgets).  For older athletes performance at the BC Championships , Canadian  and International levels.

Sportsmanship awards (Fiona Clarke awards)

Similar criteria apply but with more focus on the latter five criteria listed above rather than emphasizing performance.  Since most of our athletes satisfy these criteria to a high level already, the awards should be given to athletes who stand out above the rest in this regard.

Further comments:

Since these awards are given out in September and the winners are chosen during the summer near the end of the Track and Field season the selectors have to be careful to remember to include in their deliberations those athletes who concentrated on the cross-country events (and road-running events) which were done the previous fall and in the early spring including the Sidney 5km/2km run on July 1.
