Big increase from last year (202). Not on weekend

Thanks to all the parent volunteers who helped make these events such a success.

2) Ran the Track Rascals program for 6-8 year olds.  Dan Daniels did most of the work with Tom Dingle assisting.  Two 45 minute sessions per week for 5 weeks in April.  Stable enrollment of 22 kids.  Those who attended the program really had a ball.  Great job done by Dan Daniels. Dan also ran a similar program at Durrance School.

3) Regular coaching and practice sessions for athletes at the barn in Saanichton in January and February and at Parkland school during  March to July.  Coaches were Emily Alderson, Eleanor Richardson, John Root, Brent Chomack, Greg Dingle, Emma Murowinski and Dan Daniels plus the occasional parent volunteer.  Thanks to everyone, but a special thanks to the regular coaches who put in so much time and effort. Unfortunately, we are losing Emily Alderson, who is off to University; Greg Dingle, who is now at McMaster in Hamilton and Emma Murowinski who is going to South America.

4) Fall Cross Country sessions.  Eleanor Richardson and Brent Chomack ran an outdoor program at Centennial Park starting in September.  At the beginning of November the program was moved indoors into the barn at the Saanich Fairgrounds once a week (5:00-6:00, Thursdays) and will continue until the end of February.  15 to 20  athletes are currently participating.  Some new members have signed up since September.

5) Spring Indoor Sessions:  Held in the barn on the Saanichton Fair grounds and run by Eleanor Richardson and Greg Dingle.  Activities included running, jumping and throwing so that our athletes could be well prepared when the Island Track series in April.  A similar program will be held in the barn in January and February of 2005.

6) The club has several members in the Masters category and they train with Dan Daniels for the Seniors and Masters meets at the Parkland track and at the barn.

7) Members of the club manned water stops at two road races on the peninsula.

Eighteen athletes did at least four of the six regular meets and so qualified for Best of Meet  and the Run, Jump, Throw awards in the Island Series with the Pen Track athletes winning at least one award.  In The Best of Meet competition there were 3 firsts, 3 thirds, 1 fourth, 1 fifth, 2 sixths, 2 sevenths, 2 eights and 4 participation ribbons.  In the Run, Jump, Throw competition there were 3 firsts, 1 second, 1 third, 2 fourths, 1 seventh, 2 eighths and 3 participation ribbons.  Peninsula Track was fourth in the team competition.

Based on their performances during the track and field season, Pen Track Athletes earned 17 gold, 22 silver and 5 bronze BC Athletic Performance Crests in the 2003 season.

3) In the 2003/2004 Vancouver Island Cross Country Series 7 Pen Track athletes won series awards (ran at least four races).  There were 2 firsts, 3 seconds, 1 fourth and 1 fifth.  Peninsula came third in the team competition.

Four races in the 2004/2005 Vancouver Island Cross Country Series have been run with three more to be done in the spring of 2005.  Thus far, we had one athlete at each of the first two races race, 7 athletes at the third and 10 athletes at the fourth.  Our own race is scheduled for March 6, 2005.

Full details of all the above can be found on the club website:  www.pentrack.org

VOLUNTEERS:

1)  We have a dedicated core of volunteers who make it possible for the club’s activities to run smoothly.

a)      Coaches -  Emily Alderson, Eleanor Richardson, John Root, Greg Dingle, Brent Chomack, Emma Murowinski and Dan Daniels  plus several parent volunteers who helped out occasionally with the coaching.

            b)  Others:      Lesley Foster – Registrar

Chris Lott – Treasurer and Sidney 5K coordinator

c)  Officiating:  Peninsula’s responsibility at the Island Track Series is to man the timing crew and long jump jointly with Vic Track.  Club volunteers officiated at all the Island Series meets.  Members also officiated at the BC JD Championships, BC JD Pentathlon Championships, BC Cross Country Championships, BC Summer Games and the BC Disability Sportsfest .

2) Outside contributions by club members to the sport of Athletics:

            a) Dan Daniels :

§         Vice Chair of Board of Directors of Athletics Canada

b) Tom Dingle

§         On Board of Directors of BC Athletics

§         Chairman Vancouver Island Athletics Association

§         Zone 6 BC Summer Games coordinator for Track and Field

VANCOUVER ISLAND ATHETICS ASSOCIATION

This is the coordinating group that sets the schedules for Zone 6 (Vancouver Island and Powell River) and also develops programs for Island athletes. I am the chair of this organization.

Plans for the coming year:

1)      See schedules for the Island series in the tables below.

2)      Put on a series of clinics for athletes  The clinics are designed to bring the coaches and athletes together to expand their development. Comox Valley Cougars ran several clinics in October and November and will run some more in March 2005.

3)      The VIAA members have set up a training group for athletes born in 1990 and older.  The members of the group (called True Gold Athletics) meet once a week (alternating between Courtenay and Duncan) to train together, to develop individualized training programs and to compete as a group in the early spring.  John Root is chair of this group.

4)      Has been building up a stock of common equipment to be used by all clubs at their meets.  Currently, the VIAA already has two wind gauges,  flags for the officials, a 100m steel measuring tape (for records) and an electronic balance for weighing throwing equipment.  The VIAA is looking into gettin a large digital clock display for lap times and cross country races and a simple electronic timing system for the Island meets.

Comox Valley Cougars also ran a camp for Zone 6 Summer Games athletes after the qualifying meet. It helped forge a team spirit for the Zone 6 team and was very instrumental in the outstanding performance of the Zone 6 team at the games.

BC ATHLETICS

I am a member of the Board of Directors of BC Athletics which coordinates the sport of Athletics in British Columbia.  BC Athletics is currently trying to navigate its way through tough economic times so its options are somewhat limited.  They have recently hired Peter Olgivie, a former athlete, to oversee the track and field programs in the province.  His activities thus far give us hope for an improvement in this area.

Currently, I am the director overseeing program and technical development and am the liaison with the Junior Development Committee.  Therefore, I would appreciate any suggestions or ideas you might have about improving Athletics both locally and on the provincial level.

PENINSULA TRACK WEBSITE:

I have been maintaining the website for Peninsula Track which I hope is easy to use and which I try to keep up to date.  Feed back has been very favorable.   Any suggestions that you might have for improving this site, please let me know. The address for the site is: www.pentrack.org

I also maintain a similar site for the VIAA so that information about Island activities in Athletics are easier to come by.
