Thanks to all the parent volunteers who helped make these events such a success.

2) Ran the Track Rascals program for 6-8 year olds.  Dan Daniels did most of the work with Tom Dingle assisting.  Two 45 minute sessions per week for 5 weeks in April and May.  Stable enrollment of 13 kids.  Gained more valuable experience as to what to have in the program and those who attended the program really had a ball.  Will do again next year  but start organizing early and advertise widely. Great job done by Dan Daniels.

3) Regular coaching and practice sessions for athletes at the barn in Saanichton in January and February and at Parkland school during  March to July.  Coaches were Emily Alderson, Eleanor Richardson, John Root, Greg Dingle and Dan Daniels plus the occasional parent volunteer.  Thanks to everyone, but a special thanks to the regular coaches who put in so much time and effort.

4) Fall cross country sessions.  Eleanor Richardson ran an outdoor program at Centennial Park starting in September.  At the beginning of November the program was moved indoors into the barn at the Saanich Fairgrounds once a week (5:00-6:00, Thursdays) and will continue until the end of February.  15 to 20  JD athletes and 3-6 seniors are currently participating.  Activities will eventually  include running, jumping and throwing so that our athletes will be well prepared when the Island Track series starts in April and the BC Summer games in July.  Some new members have signed up since September.

5) The club has several members in the Masters category and they train with Dan Daniels for the seniors games and at the barn.

6) Members of the club manned water stops at two road races on the peninsula.

Based on their performances during the track and field season, Pen Track Athletes earned 17 gold, 22 silver and 5 bronze BC Athletic performance crests in the 2003 season.

3) Three races in the Vancouver Island Cross Country Series have been run with four more to be done in the spring of 2004.  The addition of two races to the series led to the schedule being revised back to the original scheme of having races both in the fall and the spring.  Thus far, we had two athletes at the first race, 5 athletes at the second and eight athletes at the third.  Our own race is scheduled for February 29, 2004.

Full details of all the above can be found on the club website:  www.pentrack.org

VOLUNTEERS:

1)  We have a dedicated core of volunteers who make it possible for the club’s activities to run smoothly.

            a) Coaches -  Emily Alderson, Eleanor Richardson, John Root, Greg Dingle and Dan Daniels  plus several parent volunteers who helped out occasionally with the coaching.  Emily Alderson, Eleanor Richardson and John Root took the Level one technical course in the spring.  John and Eleanor took the Level 2 Throws course in the fall and both are currently working on the level 2 Theory part.

            b)  Others:      Lesley Foster – Registrar

c)  Officiating:  Peninsula’s responsibility at the Island Track Series is to man the timing crew and long jump jointly with Vic Track.  Club volunteers officiated at all the Island Series meets (except our own).  Members also officiated at the BC JD Championships and the BC Disability Games .

2) Outside contributions by club members to the sport of Athletics:

            a) Dan Daniels :

§         Vice Chair of Board of Directors of Athletics Canada

b) Tom Dingle

§         On Board of Directors of BC Athletics

§         Chairman Vancouver Island Athletics Association

VANCOUVER ISLAND ATHETICS ASSOCIATION

This is the coordinating group that sets the schedules for Zone 6 (Vancouver Island and Powell River) and also develops programs for Island athletes. I am the chair of this organization.

Plans for the coming year:

1)      See schedules for the Island series in the tables below.

2)      Put on a series of clinics for midget athletes and older.  The clinics are designed to bring the coaches and athletes together to expand their development. Comox Valley Cougars have scheduled eight clinics to be given in the fall and spring in Courtenay.  The first clinic was on throws and four of our athletes plus John Root attended.  I would like to see some clinics offered closer to Victoria and I am investigating how this might be done.

3)      Comox Valley Cougars are going to run a camp for potential Summer game athletes after the qualifying meet in early May. Hopefully, it will help forge a team spirit for the Zone 6 team.

4)      Build up a stock of common equipment to be used by all clubs at their meets.  Currently, the VIAA already has two wind gauges.  The plans are to buy flags for the officials and a large digital clock display for lap times and cross country races.

BC ATHLETICS

I am a member of the Board of Directors of BC Athletics which coordinates the sport of Athletics in British Columbia.  BC Athletics is currently trying to navigate its way through tough economic times so its options are somewhat limited.  Currently, I am the director overseeing program and technical development and am the liaison with the Junior Development Committee.  Therefore, I would appreciate any suggestions or ideas you might have about improving Athletics both locally and on the provincial level.

PENINSULA TRACK WEBSITE:

This fall I developed (with the help of Greg) a website for Peninsula Track which I hope is easy to use and which I will try to keep up to date.  Any suggestions that you might have fro improving this site, please let me know.

The address for the site is: www.pentrack.org

I am now in the process of developing a similar site for the VIAA so that information about Island activities in Athletics are easier to come by.

2) BC SUMMER GAMES:  The Games are being held in Abbotsford in mid July.  In 2002, we had no athletes who qualified.  This time round there are several athletes who have a good chance to qualify for the Zone 6 team.  The team is comprised of midgets (born in 1990 or 1989) and the games are a great experience for those who go.  Last time round, the VIAA held a two day camp for all athletes who could potentially be members of the team.  This camp is also very worthwhile even if they don’t make the final team. We should support all our athletes in these endeavours.

3)  Island Series Cross Country Meets  -- 2003/2004

Seven races, three in fall and four in spring.  Need to compete in four races to be eligible for series award.
