About Us

Peninsula Track and Field Club offers members the chance to experience

cross-country running

track events from 60m to 5000m

sprint and distance hurdles

race-walking

high jump, long jump and triple jump

shotput, discus, javelin and hammer

The Club makes use of the track facilities at Parkland School where the club has two large storage bins of equipment. Some of the Cross-country work is done at the Saanichton Fairgrounds and Centennial Park.  An indoor program for track and field is also carried out at the Saanichton Fairgrounds from November to February.  In the fall and spring the club concentrates on cross-country competitions. From January to August the focus is on track and field.

For new members, the emphasis is on learning the basic skills and trying as many different events as possible, having fun and meeting others with similar tastes. More experienced members concentrate on improving their skills to the point where they can compete provincially or even nationally.

In 2006 the membership consisted of 34 Track Rascals (6-8),  53 Junior Development Athletes (JD = 9-15), 9 Juvenile (Juv = 16-17),  2 Junior (Jun=18-19) and 11 Masters ( Mast = 40+) athletes. Athletes, Coaches and Officials from Peninsula Track take part in the Vancouver Island Series, the BC. Provincial Championships, the BC Senior Games and the BC Summer Games

One member of the club, Tom Dingle, is on the board of BC Athletics and is chair of the Vancouver Island Athletics Association (VIAA)

A second member, Dan Daniels, is on the board of Athletics Canada (as vice chair).  He headed the Canadian team to the IAAF world championships in Edmonton in 2001 and the Canadian team to the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in 2002. He is also a member of the IAAF Masters committee.

What We Do

Several centers on Vancouver Island have active Track and Field Clubs. The clubs have created a cross-country series (7 races - September to November) and a Track and Field series (7 meets - April to June). The meets are hosted by the various clubs and provide the competitors with a chance to compete against others in a friendly, but competitive manner.

The athletes can then try competing at meets in other parts of the province culminating in the provincial championship meets in cross-country, track and field and multi-events. Athletes who do well at this level may then be chosen to compete at the national or even the international level.

In 2001 the club initiated a program for 6 to 8 year olds called the Track Rascals program.  The purpose of this program is to introduce younger persons to the sport of athletics in a friendly and non-competitive manner.  The emphasis is on having fun and developing physically but at the same time the participants are shown some of the basic aspects of track and field.  In 2006 the program ran for four weeks with 22 participants.

During 2007 Peninsula Track and Field Club will host

-- a cross-country race in the Island series on October 21 (70 runners)

-- a two day track and field meet at Parkland on April 21 and 22  (250 - 300 competitors)

-- a throws and pentathlon meet at Parkland on June 3 (50 - 100 competitors)

-- organize a Family 5 km fun run and walk in Sidney on July 1 (180 participants).

Moreover, parent volunteers carry out timing duties and officiate at the long jump at all the Island Series meets.

In the fall of 1998, Peninsula Track organized and hosted the BC Cross-Country Championships at the Saanichton Fairgrounds with about 400 runners from all over the province.
