Thanks to all the parent volunteers who helped make these events such a success.

2) Ran the Track Rascals program for 6-8 year olds.  Dan Daniels did most of the work with Tom Dingle and Al Szczawinski assisting.  Two 45 minute sessions per week for 4 weeks in April.  Stable enrollment of 40 kids.  Those who attended the program really had a ball.  Great job done by Dan Daniels.

3) Regular coaching and practice sessions for athletes at the barn in Saanichton in January and February and at Parkland school during  March to July.  Coaches were Eleanor Richardson, Ravi Gunasinghe, John Root, Mark Trottier, Linda Riekki, Mike MacEwan and Al Szczawinski  plus the occasional parent volunteer.  Dan Daniels helped coach the masters athletes. Thanks to everyone, but a special thanks to the regular coaches who put in so much time and effort. Unfortunately, Eleanor Richardson passed away in the fall and we will miss her tremendously in the coming year

4) Fall Cross Country sessions.  Marc Trottier and Al Szczawinski with the help of Halley Cote ran an outdoor program at Centennial Park starting in September.  Ravi Gunasinghe ran an intensive cross country program for dedicated athletes 13 years and older. At the beginning of November the program was be moved indoors into the barn at the Saanich Fairgrounds once a week (5:00-6:00, Thursdays) and will continue until the end of February.  10 to 15  athletes are currently participating.  Some new members have signed up since September.

5) Spring Indoor Sessions: Spring of 2007 were held in the barn on the Saanichton Fair grounds and run by Eleanor Richardson .  Activities included running, jumping and throwing so that our athletes could be well prepared when the Island Track series began in April.  Linda Riekki kept the older group of older midget, juvenile and junior athletes training.  Ravi Gunasinghe continued the intensive cross country program for dedicated athletes 13 years and older. A similar program will be held in the barn in January and February of 2008 under the direction of Marc Trottier and Al Szczawinski.

6) The club has several members in the Masters category and they train with Dan Daniels for the Seniors and Masters meets at the Parkland track.

7) Members of the club manned water stops at two road races on the peninsula.

2) Outside contributions by club members to the sport of Athletics:

            a) Dan Daniels :

§         Vice Chair of Board of Directors of Athletics Canada

      • Member of the Masters Committee of the IAAF

b) Tom Dingle

§         On Board of Directors of BC Athletics

§         Chairman, Vancouver Island Athletics Association

VANCOUVER ISLAND ATHETICS ASSOCIATION

This is the coordinating group that sets the schedules for Zone 6 (Vancouver Island and Powell River) and also develops programs for Island athletes. I am the chair of this organization.

Plans for the coming year:

1)      Tentative schedules for the Island series of 2008  are given in the tables below.

2)      Put on a series of clinics for athletes.  The clinics are designed to bring the coaches and athletes together to expand their development.

3)      Build up a cadre of officials for the Island series meets

4)      Have a camp, similar to the Zone 6 Summer Games camp in 2006, for athletes  chosen for the Zone 6 2008 Summer Games team.

5)      Continue building up a stock of common equipment to be used by all clubs at their meets.  Currently, the VIAA has two wind gauges,  flags for the officials, a 100m steel measuring tape (for records), an electronic balance for weighing throwing equipment, a digital clock display, a large bag of equipment for the Run Jump Throw program and a video camera.  The VIAA is looking into getting electronic timing systems for some or all of the Island meets.

BC ATHLETICS

I am a member of the Board of Directors of BC Athletics which coordinates the sport of Athletics in British Columbia.  BC Athletics is currently trying to navigate its way through tough economic times so its options are somewhat limited.  They have instituted an on line registration system for membership and an on line system for updating the web calendar of Events.  Hopefully, these will be fine tuned in the coming year

Currently, I am the Director overseeing program and technical development and am the liaison with the Junior Development Committee.  Therefore, I would appreciate any suggestions or ideas you might have about improving Athletics both locally and on the provincial level.

PENINSULA TRACK WEBSITE:

I have been maintaining the website for Peninsula Track which I hope is easy to use and which I try to keep up to date.  Feed back has been very favorable.   Any suggestions that you might have for improving this site, please let me know. The address for the site is: www.pentrack.org
