Switch of all XC series races to fall.  Numbers up 21 from 2005/2006 series.  20 Pen Track runners.

Thanks to all the parent volunteers who helped make these events such a success.

2) Ran the Track Rascals program for 6-8 year olds.  Dan Daniels did most of the work with Tom Dingle assisting.  Two 45 minute sessions per week for 4 weeks in April.  Stable enrollment of 34 kids.  Those who attended the program really had a ball.  Great job done by Dan Daniels.

3) Regular coaching and practice sessions for athletes at the barn in Saanichton in January and February and at Parkland school during  March to July.  Coaches were Eleanor Richardson, Ravi Gunasinghe, John Root, Brent Chomack, Elissa Sunderland, Linda Riekki and Emma Murowinski plus the occasional parent volunteer.  Dan Daniels helped coach the masters athletes. Thanks to everyone, but a special thanks to the regular coaches who put in so much time and effort. Unfortunately, Elissa Sunderland has moved to Seattle and Emma Murowinski is attending University in the maritimes so neither will be with us in 2007.

4) Fall Cross Country sessions.  Eleanor Richardson and Brent Chomack ran an outdoor program at Centennial Park starting in September.  Elissa Sunderland also had her group of older midget, juvenile and junior athletes training.  Ravi Gunasinghe ran an intensive cross country program for dedicated athletes 13 years and older. At the beginning of November the program was be moved indoors into the barn at the Saanich Fairgrounds once a week (5:00-6:00, Thursdays) and will continue until the end of February.  15 to 20  athletes are currently participating.  Some new members have signed up since September.

5) Spring Indoor Sessions:  Held in the barn on the Saanichton Fair grounds and run by Eleanor Richardson .  Activities included running, jumping and throwing so that our athletes could be well prepared when the Island Track series began in April.  Elissa Sunderland also had her group of older midget, juvenile and junior athletes training.  Ravi Gunasinghe continued the intensive cross country program for dedicated athletes 13 years and older. A similar program will be held in the barn in January and February of 2007.

6) The club has several members in the Masters category and they train with Dan Daniels for the Seniors and Masters meets at the Parkland track and at the barn.

7) Members of the club manned water stops at two road races on the peninsula.

37 athletes did at least four of the six regular meets and so qualified for Best of 4 Meets  and the Run, Jump, Throw awards in the Island Series with the Pen Track athletes winning at least one of the two awards.  In The Best of 4 Meets competition there were 5 firsts, 5 seconds, 3 thirds, 5 fourths, 7 fifths, 1 sixths, 2 sevenths and 9 participation ribbons.  In the Run, Jump, Throw competition there were 5 firsts, 3 seconds, 3 thirds, 2 fourths, 1 fifth, 1 seventh, 2 eighths and 9 participation ribbons.  Peninsula Track was first in the team competition, first in the boys team competition and third in the girls team competition.

Based on their performances during the track and field season, Pen Track Athletes earned 17 gold, 23 silver and 5 bronze BC Athletic Performance Crests in the 2006 season.

Two athletes were awarded Junior Development Awards for outstanding performances in 2006.

A number of masters athletes also competed in the Island series. Peninsula athletes also competed in other meets on the mainland and in the middle school and high school meets on Vancouver Island.

3) In the 2005/2006 Vancouver Island Cross Country Series (completed in March, 2006),  8 Pen Track athletes won series awards (ran at least four races).  There was 1 first, 2 seconds, 4 thirds and 1 fourth.  Peninsula came second in the team competition.

With decision by the VIAA to run all races in the Island XC series in the fall, the results for the 2006 series are now in as well.  Pen Track had 14 athletes qualify for Island Series awards (run at least 3 races). There was 1 athlete who came first in his age group, 3 that came second and 3 that came third.  There were also 2 fourths, 2 fifths, 2 sixths and a seventh.  Pensinsula came fourth in the team competition.  All clubs felt that the move to a fall only series was beneficial to athletes and clubs.

Full details of all the above can be found on the club website:  www.pentrack.org

VANCOUVER ISLAND ATHETICS ASSOCIATION

This is the coordinating group that sets the schedules for Zone 6 (Vancouver Island and Powell River) and also develops programs for Island athletes. I am the chair of this organization.

Plans for the coming year:

1)      Tentative schedules for the Island series of 2007  are given in the tables below.

2)      Put on a series of clinics for athletes.  The clinics are designed to bring the coaches and athletes together to expand their development.

3)      Build up a cadre of officials for the Island series meets

4)      Possibly have a camp, similar to the Zone 6 Summer Games camp, for athletes  13 to 15 years old.

5)      Continue building up a stock of common equipment to be used by all clubs at their meets.  Currently, the VIAA has two wind gauges,  flags for the officials, a 100m steel measuring tape (for records), an electronic balance for weighing throwing equipment, a digital clock display, a large bag of equipment for the Run Jump Throw program and a video camera.  The VIAA is looking into getting electronic timing systems for some or all of the Island meets.

BC ATHLETICS

I am a member of the Board of Directors of BC Athletics which coordinates the sport of Athletics in British Columbia.  BC Athletics is currently trying to navigate its way through tough economic times so its options are somewhat limited.  They have instituted an on line registration system for membership and an on line system for updating the web calendar of Events.

Currently, I am the director overseeing program and technical development and am the liaison with the Junior Development Committee.  Therefore, I would appreciate any suggestions or ideas you might have about improving Athletics both locally and on the provincial level.

PENINSULA TRACK WEBSITE:

I have been maintaining the website for Peninsula Track which I hope is easy to use and which I try to keep up to date.  Feed back has been very favorable.   Any suggestions that you might have for improving this site, please let me know. The address for the site is: www.pentrack.org

I also maintain a similar site for the VIAA so that information about Island activities in Athletics are easier to come by.
